Cool Video: Easter Island: How the Statues may have Walked

The Easter Island story is well known. Jared Diamond popularized the story of ecological disaster (Collapse: How Socities Chose to Fail or Succeed). A couple of years ago (2011) Terry Hunt and Carl Lipo offered a corrective interpretation (The Statues that Walked: Unraveling the Mysteries of Easter Island). They suggest that there was no large scale ecological damage prior to the discovery by Europeans.

The large statues found on Easter Island (and no where else) were thought to be connected to the ecological disaster through extensive use of logs that acted as rollers.   This Cool Video from National Geographic shows how Hunt and Lipo hypothesize how the statues moved from the quarry.
