Five Things that Happened Monday

September 06, 2021
1.  The dollar finished last week on a soft note but steadied at the start of the week, edging higher against nearly all major currencies.   The Australian and New Zealand dollars were the weakest, off about 0.3%. The Norwegian krone managed to be the most resilient, virtually flat.  Norway's central bank meets on September 23 and is expected …

Big Week Ahead

June 13, 2020
Next week is important. Two G7 central banks meet and at least half a dozen emerging market central banks. There is a European Summit and perhaps a political effort to reinvigorate the UK-EU trade talks, which seem to be crashing on the shoals of stubbornness. The ECB offers its most generous long-term targeted loan that is bound to see earlier lo…

Macro Cheat Sheet

October 24, 2018
A high-level distillation of the macro forces impacting various currencies.

US Dollar
Equity market volatility has not reached levels that will spur the Fed's concern.  No one expected a hike at next month's meeting.  The December meeting is too far way for short-term volatility to have any bearing.  The volatility in Jan-Feb did not deter …

Reprieve in Emerging Markets may be Nearly Over

October 18, 2018
We identified three forces that have undermined emerging markets as an asset class:   The US policy mix, which results in upward pressure on the dollar and interest rates, competes with other capital importers.  This coupled with the second force, the rise in oil prices (which to some extent is also the result of US policies, such as the embargo o…

Cool Video: Bloomberg Clip from Discussion on Emerging Markets

October 02, 2018
In my first television appearance since joining Bannockburn Global Forex, I joined Tom Keene and Francine Lacqua on the Bloomberg set.  In this nearly 2.5 min clip, we talk about the Indonesia rupiah and the dollar's move above the IDR15000 level for the first time since the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis.
I suggest there are several fact…

Emerging Markets: Preview of the Week Ahead

September 16, 2018
(from my colleague Dr. Win Thin)
EM FX ended mixed in Friday, capping off an up and down week.  RUB and TRY initially firmed on their respective rate hikes but gave back some of those gains heading into the weekend.  Trade tensions are likely to remain high, as press reports suggest President Trump is pushing ahead with tariffs on $200 bln of Chin…

Emerging Markets: Week Ahead Preview

September 09, 2018
(from my colleague Dr. Win Thin)

EM FX ended Friday on a mixed note, with TRY and ARS leading the gains.  However, the jobs data supports our view that the Fed is likely to continue hiking rates, which is negative for EM.  Furthermore, trade tensions will remain high after the US announced plans to slap tariffs on an additional $267 bln of Chinese…

Emerging Market Week Ahead Preview

September 03, 2018
(from my colleague Dr. Win Thin)

EM FX ended last week on a firm note, but weakness resumed Monday.  Higher than expected Turkish inflation hurt the lira, which in turn dragged down BRL, ARS, ZAR, and RUB.  We expect EM to remain under pressure this week when the US returns from holiday Tuesday.
Korea reports August CPI Tuesday, which is expected …

Emerging Markets: Week Ahead Preview

August 26, 2018
(from my colleague Dr. Win Thin)
EM FX was whipsawed last week but ended on a firm note.  We look past the noise and believe that the true signals for EM remain higher US interest rates and continued trade tensions, both of which are negative.  Turkish markets reopen after a week off.  Nothing fundamentally has changed there, and so it still poses…
