Many businesses provide coffee free to their employees, not out of generosity, but a sense that it boost productivity, especially given the WEIRD (as in people from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich Democracies) tendency to be sleep deprived.
Some surveys find that more half of American adults drink coffee daily and a quarter of those drink 13 cups of coffee or more on a weekly basis. It is an $18 bln industry in the US, but it is the second biggest commodity globally behind oil. Worldwide, some 500 bln cups of coffee are drank annually (2010). Growing coffee, of which about 2/3 of it takes place in the Americas, employs more than 25 mln people.
Finland has the highest coffee consumption per capita. Brazil is in 13th place. The US is in 25th place, but consumes the most amount of coffee overall.
Me? I don't touch the stuff personally; frankly never got used to the taste.
