Cool Video: Bloomberg TV--Dollar Supercycle and Brexit

October 03, 2016
I was on Bloomberg TV earlier today with Tom Keene, the one of a kind anchor, and Booth Business School Professor Luigi Zingales.  There are two clips here and here
In the first clip, we look at the Federal Reserve's broad trade weighted index of the dollar.  It rose 0.65% in September.  It is the fifth month this year, this measure of the do…

May's Confirmation Sends Sterling Lower

October 03, 2016
Sterling has a bad case of the Monday blues.  Even the moon looks distraught.  Prime Minister May has confirmed earlier suggestions that she will trigger Article 50 to formally begin its divorce proceedings from the EU at the end of Q1 17.    Several officials have already hinted this time frame, though many have been skeptical that Article 50 wou…

Emerging Markets: Preview of the Week Ahead

October 02, 2016
(from my colleague Dr. Win Thin)

October 02, 2016
The start of next week will likely be driven by Deutsche Bank's travails and dollar funding pressures, which may or may not be related. The end of the week features the US monthly jobs report. Despite being a noisy, high frequency time series subject to significant revisions, this report like none other can drive expectations of Fed policy.
Deu…

October 01, 2016
In the week after the BOJ and FOMC meetings, speculators made several significant adjustments to gross positions in the futures market. However, there was not clear pattern.
Of the 16 gross positions we track, five adjustments were more than 10k contracts.  Of these five, two were large adds to gross long positions. In the remaining three, specula…

Dollar Looks Vulnerable to Start Q4

October 01, 2016
The US dollar fell against most of the major currencies in Q3. The Norwegian krone was the best performer, gaining 4.4% against the greenback.  It was helped by higher oil prices and a shift away from an easing bias by the central bank.  The relatively high interest rates offered by Australia and New Zealand underpinned their currencies, which gai…
