Emerging Markets: Week Ahead Preview

August 31, 2015
(from my colleagues Dr. Win Thin and Ilan Solot)
EM is starting the week with a weak tone, though the panic of last week has abated for now.  The bounce in commodity prices seems to have run out of steam, which isn’t helping market sentiment.  Fed Vice Chair Fischer’s comments from Jackson Hole has put the September FOMC meeting back into play, and…

August 31, 2015
After a tumultuous week, the global capital markets are struggling to stabilize.  Chinese equities were under sharp downward pressure following news reports that the large-scale intervention was to end.  However, stocks roared back in late dealings, and other reports indicated that brokerages were being asked to boost their contribution to the equ…

Three Keys to the Week Ahead

August 30, 2015
There are three things that will command investors' attention in the week ahead. The first, and most important, is whether the global capital markets will continue to move toward stability after the huge drama over the past week or two. The instability appears to have shaken the confidence of some Fed officials and market participants that a S…

August 29, 2015
The US dollar has been on a roller coaster ride. Many have lost confidence in the underlying trend.  An important prop for the dollar, namely the prospects for the Fed's lift-off has been pushed out again, this time ostensibly due to the heightened volatility of the financial markets, apparently sparked by events in China.

August 28, 2015
While Asian equity markets extended yesterday's rally, a consolidative tone has emerged elsewhere.  This translates into heavier equities in Europe, including US shares that trade there, lower core bond yields, softer oil, and a dollar that has seen some of yesterday's gains pared.
Key retracements were reached, or approached yesterday.  G…

Why Have US 10-Year Yields Risen 30 bp since Monday?

August 27, 2015
US 10-year Treasury yield has risen 30 bp since Monday's low water mark.  The are a number of reports that try to link the backing up in US yields to purported to be sales by China. The Chinese sales, in turn, are linked to its efforts to stem the decline in the yuan.
China may indeed have sold Treasuries.  Bill Gross at Janus apparently sugg…
