Currency Positioning and Technical Outlook: Skeptical of Breakouts

February 22, 2014
The technical outlook for the dollar against the major currencies is not clear.  Yet, given the key events over the next two weeks, we are suspicious of the market's willingness to sustain breakouts.  This seems particularly true for the euro, where it has drawn within striking distance of the old nemesis in the $1.3800 area.
In the week ahead…

Canada Update

February 21, 2014
Canada reported dreadful December retail sales and somewhat stronger than expected price pressures in January.  The main take away is that a more dovish line from the central bank when it meets on March 5 is likely avoided.

Here's why:  The retail sales collapse can be written off to poor weather and power outages. The central bank has been p…

Dollar Ending Week Quietly

February 21, 2014
The US dollar is little changed against the major currencies.  It has spent the week largely consolidating the recent moves.  After falling against all the major currencies last week, it recovered somewhat against most this week.  The main exceptions were the euro and Swiss franc, which have gained less than 0.3%.
The weakest of the major currenc…

Resilience of Inertia

(from my colleagues Dr. Win Thin and Ilan Solot)
1) The Brazilian central bank seems to be re-weighting its policy tools
2) The yuan continued to depreciate and the PBOC conducted its first liquidity draining operation since mid-2013 3) In Kiev, hopes for the truce announced yesterday were quickly shattered by new deadly clashes 4) Political tensions …

FOMC Minutes and Thoughts on Forward Guidance

February 19, 2014
As high income economies improve and the financial sectors stabilize, central bankers understandably and rightly, want to move away from the unorthodox policies that were necessary to avoid an even larger collapse and more suffering. At the same time, they want to reassure investors, businesses and households that they do not intend on increasing …

Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership: DOA?

February 19, 2014
Top US and European trade negotiators met this week in Washington and took stock on the progress of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations.  The next formal round of talks, the fourth will be held for a week (starting March 10) in Brussels.  There are the ritualistic calls that efforts need to be redoubled, and the …
