China Action on Commodities and Crypto Featured

May 24, 2021
Overview: The US dollar is firmer in the European morning after starting out with a softer bias in Asia Pacific turnover.  The dollar-bloc currencies, sterling, and the Swiss franc are heavy, but ranges are narrow, and consolidation seems to be the flavor of the day.  Central and Eastern European currencies are faring best among emerging markets, …

Softer Yields = Softer Dollar

May 14, 2021
Overview:  The surge in consumer prices reported on Wednesday saw rates jump and the dollar push higher.  Stronger than expected producer prices yesterday, and news of wage increases (average 10%) at Mcdonalds and for 75,000 people Amazon wants to hire, saw rates ease and the dollar's upside momentum stall.  Before the week draws to a close, t…

Markets Mark Time Ahead of Fed

April 27, 2021
Overview: Short-covering ahead of the FOMC's outcome tomorrow appears to be lending the US dollar support today.  It has extended yesterday's gains against the euro, sterling, and yen.  Among emerging market currencies, the Turkish lira, along with the South Korean won and Taiwanese dollar, lead the few advancers. July 27, 2017
The CRB Index gapped higher today and it follows a gap higher opening on Tuesday, which has not been filled.  Today's gains lift the commodity index to a trendline drawn off the January and February highs and catches the high from late May.  It intersects today near 181.35 and the high has been a little over 181.17.   This is depicted on the G…

Great Graphic: CRB Index Revisited

October 27, 2016
Bond yields are rising.  The break-even rates, which compare conventional yields to the inflation-linked securities are also rising.  These developments, which we do not think can be attributed to central bank policy, encouraged us to take another look at commodity prices.
Some investors are talking about a potential head and shoulders bottom in …

Great Graphic: China's PPI and Commodities

October 14, 2016
China reported its first increase in producer prices in four years earlier today.  As one might suspect, producer prices are often driven by commodity prices.  The red line is China's PPI and the blue line is global commodity prices.  Yet the fit is not really as tight as this Great Graphic seems to show (h/t Christopher Balding).
One should …
